TWO ROADS - TWO JUICY
Two Juicy is a New England style IPA from Two Roads Brewing Company in Stratford. It’s no secret that NEIPA’s are the hottest style of beer from here to Los Angeles, so when Connecticut’s biggest and arguably most popular brewery decides to release one, everyone was on standby. The first thing I noticed about Two Juicy was the can art, a hop cone wearing an electric chair headpiece and getting shocked into lupulin purgatory was enough for me before I even opened the can.
Pouring a light orange color, the appearance is well, juicy. Thick haze from the mass amounts of dry-hop additions and low flocculating yeast is the staple Instagram-able look for a classic NEIPA. While some of its CT competitors excel in the hop presence category, some of them lack in depth. Meaning, the beers come off a bit thin. I understand the characteristics of the NEIPA but that doesn’t mean I want to drink a meek, cloudy glass of pineapple juice. Some of you may be licking your chops just thinking about that previous description but I’d rather have a little more balance with the malt presence. Lucky for me, Two Juicy delivers with a determined supporting cast of pale malt and perhaps a touch of flaked oats for mouthfeel but I cannot confirm that detail.
On the palate, there is a hefty amount of orange characteristics thanks to the additions of Citra, Mandarina Bavaria, and Hallertauer Blanc hops. Notes of orange pith, zest, and grapefruit, fill the taste buds. Coming in at 8.2% ABV, Two Juicy is dangerously drinkable, which my brother and I consider an absolute must for the Double IPA category.
