Thimble Island’s Windjammer Wheat Ale is perfectly crafted for the dog days of summer. The Branford brewery isn’t as big as its neighbor Stony Creek by any means, but they sure make some solid beer. Wheat ales fail to create much buzz these days so when we got our hands on this one, it’s safe to say it didn’t cause any butterflies or mouth drooling as we paraded it around. But as the temperature dial rose, and the soft aromatics of coriander wafted about, the six-pack was gutted in a matter of mere minutes.
While it might not be a popular style of beer in today’s hop driven universe, a well-crafted wheat ale on a hot summer day is just damn good. Considering there isn’t an abundance of CT wheat ales on the market, I would suggest locating the Windjammer at your local package store, throwing them in a cooler, and have them sit shot gun as you spend your next weekend hiking, lounging by the pool, beaching, or whatever life brings you.
The blend of wheat malt and citrus fruit creates a crushable combination that bodes well for laid back drinkers everywhere. Bonus points to Thimble for keeping this flavor harnessed at just 4.7% ABV, so you might want to pick up a pair of six-packs for your friends to enjoy too. Or hog all the wheat-y goodness for yourself, we wouldn’t blame you.
