Counter Weight’s owner and brewmaster Matt Westfall has made a name for himself in Connecticut by brewing some amazing beer at New England Brewing Company with a wide variety of styles, but maintain consistent quality. It comes as no surprise that his beer at Counter Weight is quickly becoming some of the best-received beer around.
While Headway, their flagship IPA has been taking the state by storm, it’s been CW’s off-center offerings that have been capturing the attention of so many. Van Art is a Gose brewed with pink Himalayan sea salt and blended with blueberry, blackberry, and raspberry pureé. The blend of flavorful fruit provides an intense punch of flavor, while the sea salt supports the berries and segues into a clean crisp finish.
At 4.4% ABV, this beer is every bit refreshing as it is tart and funky. The fruits play so well together and the salt does its job on the palate along with bolstering the pinkish hue to the beer which is a treat within itself. With summer winding down this is the perfect time to get down to Counter Weight’s taproom in Hamden and get your hands on a four-pack of this intriguing sour.
Counter Weight is located at 23 Raccio Park Road in Hamden. Tasting room hours are Friday 3-9PM, Saturday Noon-8PM, and Sunday Noon-5PM.
