The folks at Broad Brook Brewing Company crank out some incredible dark beers. From their Porter’s Porter, No BS Brown Ale, and the hard to find Dark Star IPA, it’s tough to find a favorite. In a beer world dominated by pale ales and IPA’s, Broad Brook stays firm and continues to churn out selections from the darker side of the spectrum.
There is, however, one lighter beer Broad Brook creates that is considered seasonal, but we’d rather crush this one year-round. Pink Dragon Wit is a traditional style Belgian Wit with a few creative tweaks that help it carve out a space for itself amongst its CT competitors.
Broad Brook takes the traditional angle on the base beer itself; grains, malts, etc. but to change things up they add dried hibiscus flowers during the boil to give the beer its unmistakable pinkish hue, albeit subtle, there’s no denying its presence.
Poured into a glass you can pick up on the sweet hibiscus aromatics right away, those same aromas can be detected on the palate as well as a healthy dose of wheat malt. Pink Dragon is purposely over-carbonated for a champagne-like feel, which is complemented well by the understated complexities of this beer. It’s crisp, drinkable, and slightly fruity all the while showcasing the classic Wit characteristics.
Taking a leap away from the dark side and into the fruity pink realm, Broad Brook connects on Pink Dragon. From a brewery that puts out one of the best Porter’s in CT, it’s nice to see the balance displayed with their seasonal Wit. While during the winter months it’s going to be progressively harder and harder to track down this beer on tap, you can always pester your local package store to stock the shelves with Pink Dragon 16oz. four-packs.
