Single-hopped IPA’s can be a tricky concoction. A pair of hops seems to work well, a trio is great, four begins to teeter on the edge of excess, while five and above just all meld together into an indistinguishable hop soup (that’s an amazing beer name if I do say so myself). So, simply throwing one hop variety into the mix might feel a little empty, unless of course, that hop is Citra.
Back East Brewing Company released Ice Cream Man late last September as a fundraiser for Therapeutic Wilderness Awareness Month which is celebrated in October. September 22nd from 4-8pm, Back East served pints and filled growlers of Ice Cream Man with $1 from each sale going toward the Jason William Hunt Foundation. There was even an ice cream truck on site, because what better way to wash down an Ice Cream Man than with a cone from an actual ice cream man? At the end of the day, Back East donated over $500 to the charity. Great beer, great cause.
Previously intended as a brewery-only offering restricted to pints and growler fills, the demand was simply too high, and Ice Cream Man can now be found in six-pack cans. It’s still found exclusively through the brewery taproom for purchase, the six-packs are released on specific days throughout the year (check Back East’s website for those release days).
The beer pours a light golden color and immediately the expansive aromas of Citra are evident. Its namesake comes from the orange creamsicle like flavors given off by the hop. A healthy dry-hop charge brings this beer from middle of the road IPA to a pungent hop bomb. Similar to its close relative Mosaic, Citra certainly proves that it can hold its own.

ICE CREAM MAN
The bitterness may be lacking a little, but there is still enough IBU’s to keep this beer from toeing into the “New England Style IPA” category. Considering its flavor profile and almost too smooth body, it’s a shame Ice Cream Man has never even experienced a true summer yet. Born in the fall and making its way through winter, Ice Cream Man is sure to have an explosive summer.
Keep an eye out for those release days on Back East’s website and be sure to get there early if you do go, an Ice Cream Man release is sure to bring the crowds.
