Broad Brook Brewing Company is located in East Windsor, hidden within a busy plaza right off the highway. The taproom was beautiful and consistent throughout. The vibe was that of a classic New England style barn hangout. The walls are scattered in seasonal décor, humorous beer artwork, merchandise, and a few ribbons for their award winning beer(s), but more on that in a moment.
Back at the taproom, the wraparound bar seats at least 15 and was very busy when we walked in. People were flocking to this place for a taste of Broad Brook’s finest offerings. We quickly put our coats down at one of the last available tables and feasted our eyes on a healthy platter of brews.
We knocked back the first few samples with little to no reaction whatsoever, nothing more than a “meh” from both of us. But everything changed when we sipped on the Hopstillo IPA. The Hopstillo is a West Coast inspired IPA with a citrus explosion at the start with a smooth refreshing finish. This taste wasn’t contested by many, but it definitely had a stiff competitor in the Rough Guy Rye IPA, a wonderfully colored IPA that comes in at a palatable 4.7% ABV. We went back and forth, but in the end, the Rough Guy just wasn’t rough enough, and Hopstillo claims the Our Favorite belt in triumph.
Something to note is that Broad Brook certainly specializes in their darker beers. So if you are a fan of brown ale’s, stouts, and porters, you’ll enjoy their fine selection from that end of the spectrum. Their Chocolate Oatmeal Stout was one of our favorites of the night. With a hint of chocolate on the nose and an even more subtle touch on the pallet, this stout was dangerously delicious.
It would be shameful not to mention Broad Brook’s calling card beer, the Porter’s Porter. Looking around the tap room, it was easy to see that the Porter’s Porter is the popular girl in school. While it goes on to win award after award, all the other beers can’t help but gossip behind her back. Broad Brook flaunts the ribbons like the proud parents they are, and rightfully so. The Porter’s Porter was a stunner and earned our Must Try award.
So if you’re a fan of beers on the (Star Wars references aside) dark side, you’ll be entertained to say the least at Broad Brook Brewing Co. An interesting stout, a few brown ales, and an award winning porter deserving of a magazine cover, this brewery won’t let you down.
