Jigawatts from Broad Brook Brewing is one of Connecticut’s staple Double IPAs. This is a beer that has been around the block a few times and still is considered one of more classic examples of the style. Hopped with Galena, Simcoe, Cascade, Citra, and Amarillo, Jigawatts is a blast of hoppy deliciousness.
For those keeping score at home, yes, the title is a nod to Back to the Future and yes, the proper scientific spelling is Gigawatt. I’d like to think of Jigawatt as a unit of power exerted by Jay-Z, but that’s just me.
When, and if you find Jigawatts at your favorite package store, pick it up. There’s nothing like having a solid DIPA in your fridge, even if it costs a little more than your average four-pack of beer. While it might not be considered “modern” in the way Double IPAs are made at the moment, there’s something great about having a beer that was made to be bold.
Just like good parenting, Jigawatts is firm and fair to style. Striking hop presence is only intensified by a sturdy malt bill that brings you home to a clean finish with just a touch of lingering hop bitterness. You get the fruitiness of the Amarillo and Citra on the nose accompanied by the bite of Simcoe on the palate. At 8.3% ABV and 95 IBU, just consider yourself warned.
