If there were a list of essential Stouts to drink this winter from Connecticut, Black Hog would be on that list with their Coffee Milk Stout. A decadent yet bold offering, the 5.5% ABV Stout from the Oxford brewery has been a mainstay in beer fridges in the Nutmeg state for quite some time.
The sweetness which is due to lactose being used in the boil is paired with robust coffee aromas and flavors from Organic Colombian Supremo and Espresso Roasted coffee which was cold-extracted. The result is a balance made for fall/winter. While leaning toward the sweet side (it is a milk stout after all), Coffee Milk Stout still supplies enough gusto to hang with the big boys.
Pouring a lush deep brown color, this beer really pops right away with its coffee aroma. Pleasant and inviting, the palate is greeted with even more coffee notes, but this time a bit more intense. The sweetness of the beer cuts off any chance at bitterness, and the creamy mouthfeel puts the cherry on top.
This beer is a core year-round offering from Black Hog so there is literally no excuses when it comes to drinking this one. Six-packs can be purchased at Black Hog’s tasting room, or can be found at your local package store. If it’s not there, be sure to ask the store manager to consider ordering if it’s a possibility, let’s keep the CT beer shelves growing.
Black Hog Brewing is located 115 Hurley Road, Oxford, CT. Tasting room hours are Wednesday 4pm-8om, Thursday 4pm-8pm, Friday 2pm-8pm, Saturday 1pm-8pm, and Sunday 1pm-5pm.
